Here’s a situation for you, one that perhaps you or someone you know might be in. You’re looking for a job – you don’t necessarily want your boss to know but you would like to make recruiters aware via LinkedIn that you … just might … be available and interested.
There have always been some very obvious methods open to us – adding “currently looking” in your professional headline or prominently in the main body of your profile would be one such way. That’s a little bit in your face though and certainly something that could be seen by your current employer.
Now, however, we have another – one that is only visible to users of the full Recruiter package on LinkedIn it’s true, but one that I’d recommend adding in any case to any active job seeker on LinkedIn.
So what does it do?
Essentially it allows us to add and share certain pieces of specific information and makes them available via one of the advanced search filters in the LinkedIn Recruiter package.

I’m a great fan of LinkedIn … as you might imagine … although it’s true that we don’t always see eye to eye on things!
However, watching breakfast television this week I saw that they had launched an initiative in Manchester that is aimed at helping to get more people on to LinkedIn with a profile and skills that properly reflects their skillset – this might be people already with a LinkedIn profile that needs improving or people yet to join the site who will be helped to get started in the right way. The aim is to help them be more findable and hence hopefully be more findable by local companies in the area looking for people with the relevant skills they have.

LinkedIn seems to be all about starting the New Year with a bit of a bang this year with a couple of announcements and some new policies being implemented. The latest relates to Searching on LinkedIn – so, as they say, do you want the good news or the bad news first?
Let’s start with the good news!
Since August 2012, any members on the free or basic accounts have been unable to see the full name or profile of anyone outside of their 1st and 2nd level connections in their search results. Specifically, instead of seeing the full name of a 3rd level connection, they would just see the first letter of their surname and anyone further removed from them (“Out of Network”) would appear simply as “LinkedIn Member”.

The location field on LinkedIn has been a bit of a bug bear for some people – in the UK, as elsewhere, it doesn’t necessarily display where you actually live or work. In fact, your displayed location has always been dictated by the postcode instead (or Zip Code, should you prefer).
This can mean, particularly outside of the main cities, that you might actually work in one location but your profile will steadfastly display somewhere totally different, simply because your town falls into a different postal area.
Let’s take an example … The Queen. One of those people that I would like to be able to do a LinkedIn Profile Makeover for – well, it would be fun wouldn’t it? Maybe I should have offered that as a Royal Wedding gift! But, I digress.

I wrote a blog post in June last year when LinkedIn announced that they had just hit 4m users in the UK and, at the time, I felt that was an impressive figure, but one which showed there was still some good growth to come.
Well, times have moved on and LinkedIn has certainly been developing apace, not inly in terms of the number of people who have joined but also in terms of the functionality that the site offers and the opportunities that it delivers to the businesses and individuals using it.
As the infographic below shows (courtesy of Vincenzo Cosenza), the growth in the UK since then has been enormous and figures indicate that there are just shy of 6m UK members now. To put that in perspective, essentially 2m new members (which equates to a 50% increase in numbers) have joined in the course of the last 9 months.
That is hugely important both in terms of real figures and also in terms of perception. It’s no wonder I’m getting more and more people tell me during my LinkedIn Workshops that (more…)
