Talk to your Connections – LinkedIn Advent Calendar (day 3)

We don’t talk enough to the people closest to us – on LinkedIn, that means your Connections.

We’re often too busy looking for new people to talk to that we forget to keep in touch with the people we already know … and our network in general.

We could all do more of that any time – but it’s particularly important in today’s world.

Answer me this: Continue reading

Treat people right – LinkedIn Advent Calendar (Day 2)

Participating on LinkedIn – or any online environment – comes with its own particular set of challenges & concerns. One of those concerns is often “What is the etiquette of using it?”

In response, people have written a whole range of pieces of advice and there are there are massive tomes advising on how to go about it. While they have their place, I honestly feel they vastly over complicate the whole thing.

Don’t get me wrong, I understand people’s misgivings. However, for LinkedIn, I feel most of us have an inbuilt understanding of how to do things, because it’s exactly what we do naturally face to face or over the phone every day. We meet new people, we introduce ourselves and ask about them … essentially, we talk to them!

However, on LinkedIn, either we disregard all of this accumulated knowledge Continue reading

Get Personal – LinkedIn Advent Calendar (Day 1)

Let me ask you a personal question.

You’ve been to networking events, haven’t you? When was the last time you went up to someone at one of these, stretched out your hand and, to introduce yourself, uttered those immortal words “Please add me to your LinkedIn network”.

Or if we put it in a slightly different context, when did you last walk into a sales meeting and say “I’d like to add you to my client list”.

That long, eh?

So, my question to you is, why do people continue to do so on LinkedIn when they send a Connect request? You may recognise the phrase – it’s the default invitation that the system sends out & I still receive loads like that. Perhaps you do too? Continue reading

Notifications return in LinkedIn Groups

LinkedIn Groups – going back 4 years, the place to be!

Then LinkedIn stopped letting us know about new discussions and we stopped going … out of sight, out of mind.

Lots … most … fell into disrepair, though some still work really well due to the unfailing efforts of the owner or moderators.

Well, you may have noticed new content notifications coming through recently and posts from some of your favourite Groups.

A way for you to focus better on topics / content you’re interested in!

If you want to receive notifications about new posts in certain key Groups for you then you can. Continue reading

Don’t make your employees into stormtroopers

A long time ago, in a company far far away …

Well, without wishing to spoil a good story, scarily it was actually last month.

I was speaking to a company about using LinkedIn as a business development tool. No surprise there.

I’d mapped out a training plan for them and, as is my preference, the 1st session included how they presented themselves on the site – their Professional branding – particularly the sales team.

That’s all covered I was reassured.

Super! But I thought I’d check anyway.

First one was okay, a couple of pieces missing but generally not too bad.

The second one looked strangely familiar. Continue reading

QR Code and Find Nearby – LinkedIn’s equivalent of the Elbow Bump

There are a couple of things which appear only in LinkedIn Mobile App that I tend to think of as LinkedIn’s equivalent of the Elbow Bump … or whatever the replacement is going to be in the short-term for the handshake and business card swapping at events and meetings.

As we start to move back to face to face meetings again, I’m expecting there will be some reticence in getting too close too soon … unless we’re meeting on Bournemouth beach I guess!

Anyway, if you want to maintain a discreet distance and perhaps exchanging business cards isn’t your ideal way of sharing details anymore, then LinkedIn has a solution – or in fact it has a couple of solutions that can work really nicely in different circumstances.

There’s an individual introduction to the two options below but the video below walks you through them as well. Anyone care to ‘Elbow Bump’ at distance? My QR code is in the video if you do! Continue reading
