Getting Prepared for LinkedIn’s new Interface
There’s been a slow drip feed of information since August when LinkedIn announced that they would be making big changes to the interface and it has subsequently turned out, some equally large changes to aspects of the functioning of the site.
Probably.
I say probably because even those with the beta version of this new interface have been experiencing a developing system with multiple changes since it arrived some 4 weeks ago, and no doubt will continue to do so as the process develops.
What we can be sure of is that we do need to be prepared and to make sure that we have our data secured so that we are prepared for whatever awaits.
These are 6 actions, I would therefore encourage you to take:
1) Back up your Profile
The format of the profile (and certain content elements of it too) is changing with the new interface so it’s a good time to make a back up to make sure that you retain all of the information that you have put in there. (more…)
Changing your LinkedIn homepage to suit you
On any network, there are going to be differing views and differing goals among those who frequent it. It’s to be expected … and, in this sense, LinkedIn is no different. Given the huge diversity of people on the site and the wide variety of reasons they have for being there, the opinions expressed will naturally include some you may not agree with or indeed wish to read.
For me personally, I like to remain focused in terms of what I share and what I read on the site and one of the places where this is most relevant is on LinkedIn’s homepage – or rather MY homepage – where my newsfeed displays Updates, news and commentary from people in my network.
Of late, LinkedIn seems to have been in a constant state of flux – some changes have been good but one of the most noticeable results has been the increase in perhaps less ‘business focused’ Updates including maths quizzes, word search and the like, as well as overtly political or religious posts – some have called this “Facebook-ification” of LinkedIn. Whatever it is, I for one could do without the vast majority of it.
Luckily, however, we have a certain degree of control over what appears there – allowing us to cut down on the noise and to focus on the content that is of interest to us individually.
This article looks at a couple of key ways you have control over the tool that is YOUR homepage. (more…)

Housekeeping essentials on LinkedIn – Practical & Functional
This is the second part of a 2 post series looking at some key housekeeping tasks that I’d recommend on LinkedIn – things that we might consider to be in the “New Year Resolution” category but which I believe some be a continual process throughout the year.
The first post looked at some key planning and usage elements that I believe to be fundamental to how we successfully work on LinkedIn and here in the second, we turn our attention to some practical and functional elements which I would encourage you build into any back up process going forward. I’m speaking at the LinkedIn Success Summit
November was another really busy month (which is great!) primarily running in-company workshops with a particular focus on Using LinkedIn for Business Development as well as presenting at some great events – there was the Midlands Expo at the start of November and then the NorthWest Expo last week at Old Trafford, both really well attended!
December is shaping up to be similarly hectic but the main event I’ll be speaking at this time is online … at the LinkedIn Success Summit which is a virtual event running from 7th – 11th December and featuring some of the best known trainers and speakers on LinkedIn from … well …all round the world really including some of my personal favourites.
I’m pleased to say that I will also be adding to the mix. 🙂

LinkedIn’s drop down menu treasure trove
There’s a veritable hidden treasure trove of functionality that is tucked away on LinkedIn behind a rather innocuous looking arrow head. You may have missed it on your way round LinkedIn, perhaps ignored it as irrelevant or stumbled across it by accident without necessarily taking too much notice of what it contained there.
Of course you may already be an avid user of what’s contained there … though I hope you will still find elements here of interest.
The “arrow head” in question sits on everyone’s Personal Profile page next to the main button (Connect / Send a message / Send Inmail) in the top part of the profile. What it contains will vary, depending on the relationship that you have with that person – so what you see there for your 1st level connections differs from that of your 2nd and 3rd, and certainly from those further removed. You have one on your profile visible just to you as well!
The one below, for instance, is what you will see if you are already to connected to the person.

I thought that I’d try to make this quite functional but “skimmable” (or even “dip in-able” if you prefer) so I’ve created a little outline of what they do and what they might offer you. (more…)

As ever, there are lots of posts appearing about things to do at the start of the New Year and I guess to an extent that this could be labelled in a similar manner, however …
