While I’m a great advocate of LinkedIn and the other online communities, I am also a massive fan of face to face meetings and the ability to ask questions and talk through an issue you have. From a training perspective, this really shows itself in the fact that people flock to onsite training sessions rather than simply check out online help forums or watch webinars with no opportunity to delve more deeply!
In an effort to help, at some of the exhibitions that I will be attending over the coming months, I am dedicating the stands to offering as much support as I can to users of LinkedIn coming along to the shows. I think that most people will agree that it’s important to have goals, both in terms of your business and indeed your personal life. Without them, it can be all too easy just to meander along without any clear direction or impetus – as the old adage goes, “if you don’t know where you’re going , any road will take you there”. [Aside: we had a slightly different turn of phrase for that where I grew up in Suffolk, but I’ll save that for another day!]
Certainly in business, planning is important if you want it to be as successful as it should be, particularly given the effort that you are putting into it. This doesn’t have to be a strategic 12 month or 3 year plan (though they do help … allegedly!), it can simply be setting a few key targets at the start of each month or year. Likewise, I feel that any marketing or business development actions that I take should also be designed with their specific goals in mind.
Does this apply to LinkedIn?

Keyword research forms the basis of every type of online marketing activity from Search Engines to pay Per click, email marketing and, of course, the elements of social networking and social search that we are interested in here. The keywords and, most commonly, keyword phrases, that result from this research will dictate to a large degree how we get found and whether we are getting found for the right products, skills and expertise or not.
How you use the keyword phrases is important but let’s take a step back for a second … even more important is finding the right ones or else all your effort using them after that point will be time wasted. If you are focusing your attention on being found for one phrase but your prospective clients are using a totally different one as they search for potential suppliers then we have a mismatch – and unfortunately you are going to be the loser in this.

You may have noticed over the past few weeks that you have had more and more notifications concerning the new LinkedIn Publishing option. These pop up under the flag symbol that sits next to your inbox in the top right hand corner of the screen.
Notifications were always designed to let you know when there things happening that you might be interested in – this historically has been things such as people viewing your profile, commenting on a Group discussion that you are following, leaving a comment on one of your updates etc.
Now, with the current state of affairs, you are also informed when a connection of yours issues a post via the LinkedIn Publishing system, (more…)
Being able to check out the recent updates that people had posted on LinkedIn or a list of the articles they had “liked” or “shared” with their connections is hugely important … it also used to be really simple. There was a section on everybody’s Personal Profile page called ‘Activity’ where it appeared and this was visible to everyone (if you allowed it in your Settings page), giving people the perfect way to keep up to date with what you’ve been sharing.
This was, however, removed in December last year to make way for the ‘Posts’ section where the articles that you publish through LinkedIn Publishing will appear, a new feature that is the extension of the LinkedIn Influencer programme and which is being rolled out to all members over the next few months.

Endorsements have been a little polemic – as well as problematic – since their introduction by LinkedIn over 18 months ago as a way for people to quickly leave a recommendation or praise others for skills and expertise that they possess.
There have been a huge range and split in terms of opinions as to their validity and use – I have published my own thoughts on them in a previous article. One of the negative aspects has been that LinkedIn continually pushes connections visiting your profile to endorse you for certain skills, some of which may not even be present on your profile. They also encourage others to endorse via email which can also prove annoying and even embarrassing to some.
So, as a way to moderate this and give all of us additional control over this section of our Personal Profile page – our key tool on LinkedIn – LinkedIn has introduced an additional control which offers (more…)
