Downloading & Backing up Connections – the LinkedIn mini-saga

LinkedIn connections download sagaWell, there’s been a bit of a hoohah over the past week regarding downloading of your connections’ details on LinkedIn … and, in the end, a lot of non changes. Not a good topic for a blog post you might think. Possibly … but I think it’s worth a brief synopsis of what went on and where we are now.

It all relates to our ability to create a download from our LinkedIn account of our connections, the people that we have spent time connecting with and engaging with on LinkedIn. We have always been able to take a download of this information instantly with name details, email, company and job title of the people we are connected to. They are our business connections, so why not?

Anyway, on Wednesday last week LinkedIn, unannounced, closed down that particular option. The “unannounced” part was not a great surprise … LinkedIn often changes things and then waits for people to find out, there is no clear mechanism for announcing them so it relies on people like myself to do so and then it seeps out into general consciousness. In this case, they had in fact replaced it with a mechanism that they introduced at the start of the year where you can download a full archive of all your LinkedIn activity, so there was an alternative.

The issue was that this could take up to 72 hours to arrive since you had to request it from LinkedIn rather than do it yourself.

Result: all hell broke loose! Lots of posts, lots of activity on Twitter (more…)

LinkedIn brings back homepage popup box

LinkedIn Pop Up BoxI know, I know – some people get excited about the smallest of things, but personally I am genuinely very pleased … nay, excited (there I’ve said it again) … to see the return of the pop up box on the homepage of LinkedIn.

The pop up box that I’m referring to appears when you hover over either the name or the photo of someone who has posted or shared something which then appears in the news feed on your LinkedIn homepage. I always felt that it was a wonderful help to the engagement process by giving me a first indication of who the person is through their professional headline as well as a reminder of any connections we share or perhaps if I have seen stuff from them before. Searching your Connections’ connections on LinkedIn
… with extra oomph!

Searching LinkedIn ConnectionsThere has been a merry old dance this past week with a lot of users who spend a good amount of time on LinkedIn getting rather upset, including myself, as we discovered that the ability to engage in true networking on LinkedIn had taken a bit of a dent.

Essentially, it seemed as though the ability to search through the connections of your 1st level connections had been removed – well, a week later and it’s back again after a bit of “not sure what’s going on” from LinkedIn’s Customer Experience Advocates (Customer Service Reps to you and I).

In case you are unsure what all the fuss is about, the culprit is the little magnifying glass shown below which gives us the opportunity to do a search through the profiles of the connections of an individual connection, perhaps to request a referral of them in the most targeted of ways:

Magnifying glass to search connections on LinkedIn

Anyway, in the interim, myself and a number of others took the time to look at other ways to access this functionality and I have seen posted in a number of places a second suggested route to find these details.

My issue was that it didn’t go far enough because it didn’t allow us to do a full advanced search through our connections’ connections … however, with a little bit of playing, I have found a way to get full advanced search of connections which I believe to be HUGELY beneficial! (more…)

LinkedIn Personal Profile: easier ways to add Rich Media

Rich Media on LinkedInOne key aspect that can really make your Personal Profile stand out is your ability to take it beyond a simple text overview of the skills and expertise and add what LinkedIn has come to call Rich Media, that is to say a selection of video, images, presentations and documents designed to help bring your profile to life and use it as a Content Marketing opportunity par excellence.

Our ability to do this was added in at the end of 2012 and yet still only a small percentage of people have taken the opportunity it offers – why is this you may well ask? Well, like so many things on LinkedIn, a major issue is that it has never been particularly obvious that the functionality existed (unless you saw it on someone else’s page), other people thought it was only on offer to Premium account holders and even for those who recognised the benefits, they weren’t sure how to go about it.

Well, worry no longer! It is still there, it is available to everyone and it is now even easier to actually add the media themselves. (more…)

Small but useful changes on LinkedIn (Feb 2015)

LinkedIn Share Button - site updateAs many of you will aware, the start of 2015 has brought with it a raft of really quite big changes on LinkedIn with search restrictions and Inmail process changes at the top of the list.

Aside from these, there have been some smaller ones going on … little things that might prove valuable and which I wanted to ensure you were aware of. Like all modifications on LinkedIn, these may well be in roll out phase at the moment, so you may or may not have them as yet … but they are coming!

Equally normally, they have not actually been announced in any way so here are some that I think might need a little bit of looking at. (more…)

LinkedIn updates – seeing other people’s updates

LinkedIn Groups pageBeing able to check out the recent updates that people had posted on LinkedIn or a list of the articles they had “liked” or “shared” with their connections is hugely important … it also used to be really simple. There was a section on everybody’s Personal Profile page called ‘Activity’ where it appeared and this was visible to everyone (if you allowed it in your Settings page), giving people the perfect way to keep up to date with what you’ve been sharing.

This was, however, removed in December last year to make way for the ‘Posts’ section where the articles that you publish through LinkedIn Publishing will appear, a new feature that is the extension of the LinkedIn Influencer programme and which is being rolled out to all members over the next few months.

However, LinkedIn has thankfully now re-instated the ability for us … albeit, you need to know where to find it! (more…)
