LinkedIn updates – seeing other people’s updates

LinkedIn Groups pageBeing able to check out the recent updates that people had posted on LinkedIn or a list of the articles they had “liked” or “shared” with their connections is hugely important … it also used to be really simple. There was a section on everybody’s Personal Profile page called ‘Activity’ where it appeared and this was visible to everyone (if you allowed it in your Settings page), giving people the perfect way to keep up to date with what you’ve been sharing.

This was, however, removed in December last year to make way for the ‘Posts’ section where the articles that you publish through LinkedIn Publishing will appear, a new feature that is the extension of the LinkedIn Influencer programme and which is being rolled out to all members over the next few months.

However, LinkedIn has thankfully now re-instated the ability for us … albeit, you need to know where to find it! (more…)

Blocking people on LinkedIn

blocking-linkedin-profilesHaving the ability to block people from being able to view and access your profile has long been a contentious issue on LinkedIn and there has been an ongoing campaign to get an option that mirrors a similar function on other networking sites, and Facebook in part. As a result, there has been a considerable amount of pressure brought to bear from certain quarters to create such an option, the focus coming from a personal security perspective, citing occurrences of stalking and inappropriate behaviour. Follow Company button from LinkedIn

Company Followers on LinkedInLinkedIn announced yesterday that they were launching a ‘Follow Company’ button – essentially a graphic button that organisations could place, for example, on their own websites to encourage people to ‘follow’ their company on LinkedIn. Just to clarify, following a company in LinkedIn’s terms simply means that you receive news automatically from the company either via email or as an update on your LinkedIn homepage, according to your preferences.

You’ve been able to follow companies from the LinkedIn site for a couple of years now, but this is the logical extension to that by facilitating it away from just the Company pages on LinkedIn. It also ties nicely in with the other feature that LinkedIn added to the Company pages at the end of last year which allows organisations to post updates and hence opens up the opportunity for them to start to use their Company Page more proactively as a company mouthpiece and marketing tool. Dissecting your LinkedIn Groups page

LinkedIn Groups pageWhile I’d be the first to admit that this might not be the most exciting page on LinkedIn, nevertheless the Groups page – the one that lists all of the groups that you are a member of – does in fact contain a lot of good information and provides a great summary or overview of the latest activity going on in the Groups you have joined. And after all, the Groups are places which are likely to be a key element of your LinkedIn activity.

It’s true that you can never really hope to keep on top of all the discussions that go on in the groups but this summary or ‘homepage’ for the Groups will give us a great overview of where the latest activity is happening and so where we should perhaps be focusing our attention. After all, we might be able to join up to 50 groups but, with the best will in the world, you’re only going to be able to participate in 4 to 5 of them at best.

Why might this me of use

Keeping up with LinkedIn

LinkedIn Site updatesWell, one of the benefits of providing courses and training in LinkedIn is that I have to make sure that I keep up to date with all of the changes that LinkedIn make to their site so that I can pass this information on to my clients and the attendees of the LinkedIn courses I run.

Currently, there are lots and lots of modifications happening to the LinkedIn site and so, as a way to help pass on details of the changes, I’ve set up a new category called LinkedIn site changes and will be attempting to pass on all of the changes I spot as I spot them or as they are announced.

I’m also looking at the option of running a monthly half hour webinar if there (more…)

LinkedIn Tips: avoiding update clutter (basic)

LinkedIn Tips and AdviceDuring the LinkedIn training sessions I run, one of the things that I find LinkedIn users are getting a little tired of is the increasing stream of non business updates from their connections on their LinkedIn homepage. Don’t worry, there is an easy solution!

A lot of these updates come from your connections who have directly tied their Twitter account to their LinkedIn one without any filtering. This means that you can get a lot of chatter which you may not want on a business network.

Like so much on LinkedIn, however, you can alter what you see on screen and customise it to your own tastes. In this case, you can hide updates from individuals as required without disrupting those that you get from other connections. There are two ways (more…)
