Housekeeping essentials on LinkedIn – Practical & Functional

Linkedin Housekeeping ChecklistThis is the second part of a 2 post series looking at some key housekeeping tasks that I’d recommend on LinkedIn – things that we might consider to be in the “New Year Resolution” category but which I believe some be a continual process throughout the year.

The first post looked at some key planning and usage elements that I believe to be fundamental to how we successfully work on LinkedIn and here in the second, we turn our attention to some practical and functional elements which I would encourage you build into any back up process going forward. Housekeeping essentials on LinkedIn – Planning & Usage

LinkedIn Housekeeping 2015As ever, there are lots of posts appearing about things to do at the start of the New Year and I guess to an extent that this could be labelled in a similar manner, however …

While these are certainly things that you should be doing during as a start of the year re-appraisal, they are also ones that would be valuable as an ongoing checking – not daily or weekly necessarily but certainly when the requirement arises.

I have divided these into two sections and created two posts around them – this is the first and examines some key planning and usage elements that I believe to be fundamental to how we successfully work on LinkedIn and the second, some practical and functional elements which I would encourage you build into an back up process going forward. I’m speaking at the LinkedIn Success Summit

banner2November was another really busy month (which is great!) primarily running in-company workshops with a particular focus on Using LinkedIn for Business Development as well as presenting at some great events – there was the Midlands Expo at the start of November and then the NorthWest Expo last week at Old Trafford, both really well attended!

December is shaping up to be similarly hectic but the main event I’ll be speaking at this time is online … at the LinkedIn Success Summit which is a virtual event running from 7th – 11th December and featuring some of the best known trainers and speakers on LinkedIn from … well …all round the world really including some of my personal favourites.

I’m pleased to say that I will also be adding to the mix. 🙂

Get fewer Emails from LinkedIn

Stop LinkedIn emailsLast week LinkedIn made a “big announcement” that they were cutting down on the number of emails they were sending out in response to member feedback. Very admirable.

They also had this as one of the points in their quarterly sales announcement to the Stock Market. Really? Slow news day perhaps.

Why do I find this less than inspiring? I suppose because although they state that they have managed to cut out 4 out of 10 emails that they are sending out, although they decide which ones. Personally I prefer to be in control and decide which emails I receive and which I choose not to … and you can be, in fact you have always been able to be. (more…)

LinkedIn brings back homepage popup box

LinkedIn Pop Up BoxI know, I know – some people get excited about the smallest of things, but personally I am genuinely very pleased … nay, excited (there I’ve said it again) … to see the return of the pop up box on the homepage of LinkedIn.

The pop up box that I’m referring to appears when you hover over either the name or the photo of someone who has posted or shared something which then appears in the news feed on your LinkedIn homepage. I always felt that it was a wonderful help to the engagement process by giving me a first indication of who the person is through their professional headline as well as a reminder of any connections we share or perhaps if I have seen stuff from them before. Tagging your Connections on LinkedIn

Sorting ConnectionsYour connections are key to everything that you do on LinkedIn – they really are the start point for all of your activity, either directly or as advocates for what you do. They form the core of your network and your 2nd level, 3rd level connections etc. all radiate out from them, so without them, you have no network! Fairly key, I think you’d agree!

One of our first steps therefore needs to be that we ensure that we connect up with our ‘real world’ network on LinkedIn, to gather the people that we have worked with, customers, suppliers and partners around you – this in turn will hopefully allow us to then work with them and tap into opportunities that will be jointly beneficial. These are after all the people who are best placed to recommend you, your expertise and the services or products that you offer or represent.

To help this ongoing process to happen most effectively, it’s important to be able to divide our connections up and be able to sort, categorise and filter them – that way, if you are looking to reach out and communicate to particular groups of people you will be able to do so as effectively as possible. Working with LinkedIn’s system to achieve this and then using that categorisation in a way which will benefit both you and them is consequently going to be very important. (more…)
