Make the most of your Linkedin Recommendations

LinkedIn Questions and AnswersWhenever I run a LinkedIn Training session, no matter whether it is an Introduction to LinkedIn, or something more advanced for Sales and Marketing teams or Recruiters, we always, always, look at the Recommendations feature in LinkedIn (you might call it “testimonials”) as a great way to demonstrate a big “thumbs up” and indication of trust for you and and what you do.

It is of course also a great differentiator – a key element when we are looking to increase our sales and marketing reach. I can assure you that if you have two suppliers or partners or candidates in front of you with seemingly similar qualifications and experience, then the Recommendations of others will be a key deciding factor!

Anyway, I was recently asked if there was a way to direct people directly to the Recommendations section on someone’s LinkedIn profile. What they wanted (more…)

LinkedIn Profiles: 5 new areas to consider

LinkedIn Site updatesThere has been a relativley low key launch – maybe appearance would be a better description rather than launch – of some additional sections which can be used on your LInkedIn profile. A pity as I think that they are ones that could most certainly be put to good use and, as with many of the other sections, offer another opportunity for people to display and push elements that are certainly worthy of promoting further.

This section is currently ‘hidden away’ in the “edit profile” section of the site which I guess is why so few people have as yet incorporated them into their profiles. The new section allows us to add one or all of a series of additional pieces of information covering (more…)

LinkedIn Tips: back up your connections list

LinkedIn Tips and AdviceI’ve always been a fan of making sure that my information and files are safe and sound – I guess it comes from having lost data or information in the past (having of course vowed “that would never happen to me!”). At the same time, I’m also a great fan of using the information that we have to best effect – though only within both the letter and the spirit of the law!

Anyway, although you have your connections nicely stored away within your LinkedIn system, it may also make sense to ensure you keep a backup and perhaps that they are also kept in your own Contact Management or email system, whether you use Outlook for example or something more sophisticated.

Let’s be clear, this is not because I believe that you should (more…)

LinkedIn Profile – Professional Headlines which work for you

LinkedIn Profile SeriesThis is part of a series of posts looking at the key elements of the LinkedIn profile and ways in which you can optimise them to serve you best in your use of LinkedIn.

I will be looking to go through each of the areas that were outlined in the earlier post 10 focus areas on your LinkedIn profile and explaining in greater depth the ways that you might like to look at developing your own. If you do fancy additional help then there is also the LinkedIn Profile Makeover which will provide you with specific advice and information tailored to your own requirements.

The Professional Headline

On the profile page, the professional headline appears just below your name and so, as you can see below, occupies a very prominent and strong position – essentially, it’s always (more…)

10 focus areas on your LinkedIn profile

LinkedIn Profiles - 10 focus pointsThe old adage states that “All roads lead to Rome” and, for me, on most social networking sites the same is true when it comes to your profile page – no matter where you come across someone, you will automatically gravitate back to their profile page soon afterwards to find out more about them. This makes your profile page an essential element to get right and one that is worth spending the time on to make sure it works for you and not against you.

This is particularly true on LinkedIn where you now have an increasing number of ways to communicate what you do, allowing you to both state and demonstrate your experience and your knowledge. However, it isn’t a CV (Resume) so don’t just take your “normal” CV and copy (more…)

LinkedIn Tips: avoiding update clutter (basic)

LinkedIn Tips and AdviceDuring the LinkedIn training sessions I run, one of the things that I find LinkedIn users are getting a little tired of is the increasing stream of non business updates from their connections on their LinkedIn homepage. Don’t worry, there is an easy solution!

A lot of these updates come from your connections who have directly tied their Twitter account to their LinkedIn one without any filtering. This means that you can get a lot of chatter which you may not want on a business network.

Like so much on LinkedIn, however, you can alter what you see on screen and customise it to your own tastes. In this case, you can hide updates from individuals as required without disrupting those that you get from other connections. There are two ways (more…)
