New LinkedIn Profile changes – how to benefit from them!

There are some layout changes to the Personal Profile page which are being rolled out at the moment on LinkedIn – this is following a similar phase to other roll outs with a beta phase coming first and then extended across the network.

You may not yet have it but forewarned is forearmed so here are the changes I’ve noticed and some recommendations for 4 key elements where the emphasis has shifted.

[I’ve also highlighted some Points To Note (PTN) that I feel warrant a special mention – forgive me the use of yet another acronym but NB didn’t really seem to cut it anymore.]

What’s changing?

Well, for those of us who are yet to receive the new format, here are the two side by side: (more…)

LinkedIn Personal Profile: easier ways to add Rich Media

Rich Media on LinkedInOne key aspect that can really make your Personal Profile stand out is your ability to take it beyond a simple text overview of the skills and expertise and add what LinkedIn has come to call Rich Media, that is to say a selection of video, images, presentations and documents designed to help bring your profile to life and use it as a Content Marketing opportunity par excellence.

Our ability to do this was added in at the end of 2012 and yet still only a small percentage of people have taken the opportunity it offers – why is this you may well ask? Well, like so many things on LinkedIn, a major issue is that it has never been particularly obvious that the functionality existed (unless you saw it on someone else’s page), other people thought it was only on offer to Premium account holders and even for those who recognised the benefits, they weren’t sure how to go about it.

Well, worry no longer! It is still there, it is available to everyone and it is now even easier to actually add the media themselves. (more…)

LinkedIn’s New Profile – the lowdown and an action plan!

Well it looks like LinkedIn’s new profile for our personal accounts is being rolled out to the next phase of people and speeding up a little in the process, so I felt it was time to give a bit of a lowdown on it and what you are going to need to do.

By the way, for those who are coming along to the Public workshops in January, don’t worry it will all be included there! 😉 As a very quick aside – lots of new locations and a special offer to launch them with on the 2013 Public Schedule – you can find details here!

This is quite a long post, so feel free to dip in and out of the areas of most interest to you.

There’s good and bad to report

On with the details! To start with, I have some good news and I have some bad news (more…)

LinkedIn lets the Queen live in Windsor

LinkedIn Share Button - site updateThe location field on LinkedIn has been a bit of a bug bear for some people – in the UK, as elsewhere, it doesn’t necessarily display where you actually live or work. In fact, your displayed location has always been dictated by the postcode instead (or Zip Code, should you prefer).

This can mean, particularly outside of the main cities, that you might actually work in one location but your profile will steadfastly display somewhere totally different, simply because your town falls into a different postal area.

Let’s take an example … The Queen. One of those people that I would like to be able to do a LinkedIn Profile Makeover for – well, it would be fun wouldn’t it? Maybe I should have offered that as a Royal Wedding gift! But, I digress.

Anyway, as it used to stand, if the Queen used her Windsor Castle address on LinkedIn, then (more…)

Make the most of your Linkedin Recommendations

LinkedIn Questions and AnswersWhenever I run a LinkedIn Training session, no matter whether it is an Introduction to LinkedIn, or something more advanced for Sales and Marketing teams or Recruiters, we always, always, look at the Recommendations feature in LinkedIn (you might call it “testimonials”) as a great way to demonstrate a big “thumbs up” and indication of trust for you and and what you do.

It is of course also a great differentiator – a key element when we are looking to increase our sales and marketing reach. I can assure you that if you have two suppliers or partners or candidates in front of you with seemingly similar qualifications and experience, then the Recommendations of others will be a key deciding factor!

Anyway, I was recently asked if there was a way to direct people directly to the Recommendations section on someone’s LinkedIn profile. What they wanted (more…)
