Remember the Time Warp for LinkedIn Mobile App

Looks like LinkedIn have gone all Time Warp on us when it comes to the mobile app. What are you on about I hear you ask …

Well, finally they have started to bring into line one outstanding difference between the desktop and the mobile app – the banner that sits at the top of your profile should contain lots of good information but the bane of the marketing department’s life has been the fact that while your photo was moved across to the left hand side at the start of 2017, on the mobile app it has steadfastly remained in the centre on the mobile app.

As of this week, however, it has just taken a Jump to the Left (now we get to the Time Warp reference!) to put it in line with the desktop and give us all an additional tranche (more…)

Make sure you are not hidden

Are you unwittingly hiding your photo? Here’s a 2 minute check for you to make sure you’re not.

Over the past month this has been the case for nearly 20 people in the classes I’ve run who thought their photo was there for all to see, so I thought I’d share this with you.

Although we can see our photo, sometimes settings get changed and so people outside our 1st degree connections cannot. Clearly this is not good as:

► you lose impact and the chance to make a good 1st impression
► it gives the wrong impression, what are you hiding?
► it can make people more wary of connecting with you, reducing opportunities.

5 Key engagement places on LinkedIn

Engagement is the lifeblood on LinkedIn and encouraging it is a priority from LinkedIn’s perspective but should also be from our own. The more time we spend engaging on their platform the happier LinkedIn is and equally the more we listen and talk to others here, the better our understanding of them and the deeper the potential relationship, wherever our focus lies.

When it comes to engagement, there are a number of places on LinkedIn that every salesperson should be visiting on a regular basis and ideally every day.

These are all potential sales triggers which, we respond appropriately, can prove highly valuable source potential contacts and of potential prospects.

1. Who’s Looked at Your Profile

The first key area which is often overlooked is who has looked at your profile page – if someone has looked at your profile page and your profile is written your target audience in mind, then one of the key reasons for this is that they will be interested in what you do or offer. (more…)

10 LinkedIn Tips and Advice revisited

Over the past few weeks, I have sent out a series of LinkedIn hints and tips in infographic form relating to elements on the site that I have been asked about, that I have seen have been causing issues or things that have changed and were worthy of a mention.

I have decided to bring those together in a single post to save you having to search them out on my LinkedIn feed in an effort to be extra helpful .. oh, and with an additional explanation below each one in case the image does tell you the whole story!

1. Don’t send your message before you want to

When you go to your Messenger system, there are occasions when, quite naturally, you might want to start a new paragraph and have hit the key to go to a new line in the message and yet found that the message instead has been sent. Annoying!

That is unfortunately the default format on LinkedIn. However, if you go to the Messanger area then just next to the “Send” button, you will see three dots which allows you to turn that off and allow you to format your message as you wish. (more…)

Saved searches and Search Alerts on LinkedIn

When I’m using LinkedIn for targeted business development, my first port of call is unsurprisingly LinkedIn’s people search function – not just the initial search box at the top of every page but the filter filters that used to be called the “Advanced Search” in its previous incarnations.

Being able to target the type of person I’m looking to approach using a combination of job title, company, location, industry or any of the other filters that LinkedIn offers is an absolute godsend. That’s also why it always takes up an important slot in the “LinkedIn for Business” workshops that I run.

Creating the right search takes time though, particularly if you are going to make sure that you cover all the bases which will include variants of relevant job titles for the type of people you are targeting. (I talk about that in my “Think before you search” post in more details) Once you have done so, you don’t want to lose your work – instead you are going to want to use that time and time again, to build on it as required. Active status on LinkedIn

Active Status LinkedIn headerYou may have noted that LinkedIn seems to have succumbed to an attack of the measles … green measles to be precise. For some they arrived last year only to disappear for a while, but then returned last week once again and are now back with a vengeance. For others, you may be seeing them for the first time and wondering what they signify.

Don’t worry, they’re not contagious. However, they do potentially offer us some valuable focus for our interactions on LinkedIn – so let’s get to the nitty gritty of what they are all about!

What do they mean?

This is part of the LinkedIn system that is called the ‘Active Status’ indicator and quite simply it shows when your connections are actually logged into the site and, to a certain point, also when they were last active.
