6 ways to use LinkedIn as a Job seeker

Job Seeker on LinkedInI have been lucky enough to work with a number of Jobs Clubs and Careers / Outplacement teams in my role as a LinkedIn trainer and consultant, and met a lot of great people who have gone on to really explore LinkedIn as a powerful ally in their own Job search.

In the sessions I’ve run, we try to cover a range of opportunities that LinkedIn offers rather than focus solely on, say, the profile or the Jobs area – there are so many additional tools that we can tap into and I guess many different ways that we can go about the process of looking for a new job. The areas that we cover therefore include making the most of the Personal Profile space that we have on LinkedIn (to attract and then inform), active searching and connecting with relevant people, marketing and positioning yourself to maintain visibility, as well as using the Job Board to keep an eye out for potential roles.

Above all it’s another tool in the Job Seeker’s arsenal and one that is particularly valuable when it comes to the proactive job searching, particularly those 70% of jobs that allegedly are never actually advertised externally. Getting in front of the right people

Communicating your career intentions on LinkedIn
(aka – it’s not you it’s me)

Jobs on LinkedInHere’s a situation for you, one that perhaps you or someone you know might be in. You’re looking for a job – you don’t necessarily want your boss to know but you would like to make recruiters aware via LinkedIn that you … just might … be available and interested.

There have always been some very obvious methods open to us – adding “currently looking” in your professional headline or prominently in the main body of your profile would be one such way. That’s a little bit in your face though and certainly something that could be seen by your current employer.

Now, however, we have another – one that is only visible to users of the full Recruiter package on LinkedIn it’s true, but one that I’d recommend adding in any case to any active job seeker on LinkedIn.

So what does it do?

Essentially it allows us to add and share certain pieces of specific information and makes them available via one of the advanced search filters in the LinkedIn Recruiter package.

LinkedIn’s “Project Manchester” – matching people and required skills in Manchester

City of Manchester signI’m a great fan of LinkedIn … as you might imagine … although it’s true that we don’t always see eye to eye on things!

However, watching breakfast television this week I saw that they had launched an initiative in Manchester that is aimed at helping to get more people on to LinkedIn with a profile and skills that properly reflects their skillset – this might be people already with a LinkedIn profile that needs improving or people yet to join the site who will be helped to get started in the right way. The aim is to help them be more findable and hence hopefully be more findable by local companies in the area looking for people with the relevant skills they have.
