Open Letter from LinkedIn’s Algorithm
I’m getting a little fed up of the blame culture here on LinkedIn and, to be honest, it’s getting me down.
The algorithm did this, the algorithm did that … and all because you’re getting rubbish in your LinkedIn newsfeed.
Well, IT’S NOT MY FAULT!
(Sorry about the capitals but I feel reallllllly strongly about this)
Well, when I say it’s not my fault, it is sort of … but it’s yours too!
“How can we help?” I hear you ask?
Well for starters if you think something you see is good and it’s something you’d like to see more of, then LET ME KNOW! I’m not a mind reader after all.
Just ‘Like’ it or ‘Love’ it or ‘Celebrate’ it or (more…)

Saved searches and Search Alerts on LinkedIn
There’s a quick way to keep up to date with new people who fit the prospecting criteria you’re interested in, without lifting a finger. Essentially, new business prospects delivered to your inbox every week … automatically. Sounds interesting? Then read on …
When I’m using LinkedIn for targeted business development, my first port of call is unsurprisingly LinkedIn’s people search function – not just the initial search box at the top of every page but the filter filters that used to be called the “Advanced Search” in its previous incarnations.
Being able to target the type of person I’m looking to approach using a combination of job title, company, location, industry or any of the other filters that LinkedIn offers is an absolute godsend. That’s also why it always takes up an important slot in the “LinkedIn for Business” workshops that I run.
Creating the right search takes time though, particularly if you are going to make sure that you cover all the bases which will include variants of relevant job titles for the type of people you are targeting. (I talk about that in my “Think before you search” post in more details) Once you have done so, you don’t want to lose your work – instead you are going to want to use that time and time again, to build on it as required. 12 Hacks you’ll love on LinkedIn
Okay, you’ve already sussed me out, I don’t really know what a hack is … it always used to be something negative when I was growing up but now it just seems to be used in place of “ways to do things”.
So, anyway, here are 12 great hacks that you might find of value on LinkedIn, that’s to say some “really useful things you can do and find on LinkedIn that you may not have previously known about”.
Okay … “LinkedIn hacks” is shorter, I’ll grant you that.
Now, these aren’t going to make or break whether LinkedIn is a success for you – having an unfocused profile, blindly connecting, not engaging and pitching when you should be listening will all make a much better job of that – but perhaps they may add a little to your experience on the site and open up some of the options you have available to you.
1. Connect Date
The date when you first connected with someone on LinkedIn can be remarkably useful, particularly as you start (more…)

Think when you search on LinkedIn …
or better still, think before you search
No matter why we are on LinkedIn, using the search functionality effectively is always going to be hugely important. It can save us hours by ensuring that we target those who are going to fit our criteria and near as possible and allow us to focus in on quickly and with greater clarity on whom we want to talk to.
In many ways, it really doesn’t matter whether you are prospecting for new clients and business, identifying new partners or suppliers, using LinkedIn to identify potential candidates for a role you are looking to fill or identifying potential company contacts as a job seeker … in each of these cases, the more effectively we search, the greater our chances of success are.
This is all particularly true with the search options on the new 2017 interface – most of the functionality that we need is still in there but so many people people that because the ‘advanced search’ link has disappeared that you can no longer do complex searches on the free account. Not true! All the searches below are from the free account.
Anyway, before you start to search, take a step back …
… think …
… decide whom you are really looking for …
… what position they might hold or what skills they might possess …
… how might they present these elements themselves …
… then start to search.
The greater the number of “right people” that we can establish a first pool of people who fit our search criteria the better it will be for us and allow us to apply the more targeted criteria to a better set of possible targets. (more…)

Create a stronger LinkedIn network with Centres of Influence
In all the LinkedIn training sessions I run, whether they are sales, marketing or recruitment focused, we always spend a good amount of time looking at different ways to identify potential prospects or introducers on the site, as well as the differing ways to introduce yourself to them.
However, before tapping into the opportunities on offer from LinkedIn’s Advanced search, I always encourage people to first consider developing their networks further than they have already, in order to facilitate the process. As a first step, logically we start by checking who in our “real life” networks are currently on LinkedIn and also identifying what it really is that they are looking for from their network. This helps to give clarity to where our focus should be.
One area that I encourage then to look at are what I tend to call Centres of Influence – these are people who have networks which are highly focused around their area of expertise, an area which, most critically, coincides with your target audience. (more…)

Searching your Connections’ connections on LinkedIn
… with extra oomph!
There has been a merry old dance this past week with a lot of users who spend a good amount of time on LinkedIn getting rather upset, including myself, as we discovered that the ability to engage in true networking on LinkedIn had taken a bit of a dent.
Essentially, it seemed as though the ability to search through the connections of your 1st level connections had been removed – well, a week later and it’s back again after a bit of “not sure what’s going on” from LinkedIn’s Customer Experience Advocates (Customer Service Reps to you and I).
In case you are unsure what all the fuss is about, the culprit is the little magnifying glass shown below which gives us the opportunity to do a search through the profiles of the connections of an individual connection, perhaps to request a referral of them in the most targeted of ways:
Anyway, in the interim, myself and a number of others took the time to look at other ways to access this functionality and I have seen posted in a number of places a second suggested route to find these details.
My issue was that it didn’t go far enough because it didn’t allow us to do a full advanced search through our connections’ connections … however, with a little bit of playing, I have found a way to get full advanced search of connections which I believe to be HUGELY beneficial! (more…)
