People Also Viewed – do you really need it?

The ‘People Also Viewed’ section is an area that has great potential value to certain types of people looking at your profile page. However, unlike most other parts of your profile, this is one that you don’t directly control in terms of the information it provides as it is created by LinkedIn.

More annoyingly, the value it provides isn’t reflected back to you, but rather benefits the person looking or indeed the people who appear in this list. Not good! In fact, it could be just the opposite and actually be detrimental to you, giving a link away from all the great information you are providing on your profile.

Just to be clear, the section I’m talking about is the column on the right hand side of your profile page which displays a series of profile links. (more…)

New LinkedIn Profile changes – how to benefit from them!

There are some layout changes to the Personal Profile page which are being rolled out at the moment on LinkedIn – this is following a similar phase to other roll outs with a beta phase coming first and then extended across the network.

You may not yet have it but forewarned is forearmed so here are the changes I’ve noticed and some recommendations for 4 key elements where the emphasis has shifted.

[I’ve also highlighted some Points To Note (PTN) that I feel warrant a special mention – forgive me the use of yet another acronym but NB didn’t really seem to cut it anymore.]

What’s changing?

Well, for those of us who are yet to receive the new format, here are the two side by side: (more…)

Why having a LinkedIn strategy is important

LinkedIn Strategy & PlanningI think that most people will agree that it’s important to have goals, both in terms of your business and indeed your personal life. Without them, it can be all too easy just to meander along without any clear direction or impetus – as the old adage goes, “if you don’t know where you’re going , any road will take you there”. [Aside: we had a slightly different turn of phrase for that where I grew up in Suffolk, but I’ll save that for another day!]

Certainly in business, planning is important if you want it to be as successful as it should be, particularly given the effort that you are putting into it. This doesn’t have to be a strategic 12 month or 3 year plan (though they do help … allegedly!), it can simply be setting a few key targets at the start of each month or year. Likewise, I feel that any marketing or business development actions that I take should also be designed with their specific goals in mind.

Does this apply to LinkedIn?

For me, planning your participation on LinkedIn falls fairly and squarely into this category. Particularly within a B2B environment, it is likely to be a key component of your online marketing strategy. It is therefore necessary to ensure (more…)

How Keyword Research helps on LinkedIn

LinkedIn Search - Keyword Research - SEOKeyword research forms the basis of every type of online marketing activity from Search Engines to pay Per click, email marketing and, of course, the elements of social networking and social search that we are interested in here. The keywords and, most commonly, keyword phrases, that result from this research will dictate to a large degree how we get found and whether we are getting found for the right products, skills and expertise or not.

How you use the keyword phrases is important but let’s take a step back for a second … even more important is finding the right ones or else all your effort using them after that point will be time wasted. You can access the Local Viking google my business management here and also Web Chimpy to know more about how to improve the SEO. You can also take up local seo training course like Local Client Takeover. If you are focusing your attention on being found for one phrase but your prospective clients are using a totally different one as they search for potential suppliers then we have a mismatch – and unfortunately you are going to be the loser in this.  To learn more about this, take a visit at https://victoriousseo.com/case-studies/.

Why bother with LinkedIn?

When we search for people to connect with on LinkedIn, we tend to do so for a variety of different reasons. Two of the main ones are that we are looking for (more…)

Controlling LinkedIn Endorsements

Controlling LinkedIn EndorsementsEndorsements have been a little polemic – as well as problematic – since their introduction by LinkedIn over 18 months ago as a way for people to quickly leave a recommendation or praise others for skills and expertise that they possess.

There have been a huge range and split in terms of opinions as to their validity and use – I have published my own thoughts on them in a previous article. One of the negative aspects has been that LinkedIn continually pushes connections visiting your profile to endorse you for certain skills, some of which may not even be present on your profile. They also encourage others to endorse via email which can also prove annoying and even embarrassing to some.

So, as a way to moderate this and give all of us additional control over this section of our Personal Profile page – our key tool on LinkedIn – LinkedIn has introduced an additional control which offers (more…)

Your LinkedIn Public Profile is … well, public

LinkedIn Anonymous userWhen we talk about getting our profile up on LinkedIn, most of the time we’re thinking about our Personal Profile. And rightly so, it is the central element of our activity on LinkedIn. However, there are two other “profiles” that we have control over as well – or maybe one and a half would be closer. Our company’s profile (better known as the Company Pages) and our Public Profile.

Our Personal Profile is where we add our details, experience, summary and all of the information that’s relevant about us; the Company Pages, on the other hand, is where we can represent our company and its products or services; finally, our Public Profile … the “half” … is one that is automatically created from our Personal Profile and then appears out on the Web.

At first sight, this Public Profile may seem unimportant in comparison, but do bear in mind that while your main profile can be viewed by the 259+ million members of LinkedIn, your Public Profile is (more…)
